- <p> DIED. Arthur Hardy, 78, psychiatrist who pioneered treatment
- for agoraphobia, the fear of going out-of-doors; of cancer; in
- Menlo Park, Calif. In the early 1960s Hardy broke with classical
- Freudian approaches for treating people suffering from an
- abnormal fear of being in open or public places. He renamed the
- disorder territorial apprehension. Hardy paid house calls in
- which he used relaxation techniques, assertiveness training and
- other behavioral methods to help cure patients of their
- anxieties.
